Report on the Activities of Obafemi Awolowo Muslim Graduate Association (UNIFEMGA), Ilorin Branch for 1429/1430 AH (2008/2009)

Assalam Alaykum,

Preamble

Praises and adorations belong to Allah (SWT), the Lord of the Universe, the Sustainer of all things, and the One who guides to the right path. May the choicest of Allah’s blessings continue to descend on the noble soul of our Prophet, Muhammad, his house hold, his companions, and on the generality of the Muslim Ummah.

This report gives a summary of the activities of the Ilorin Branch of UNIFEMGA, since the last National Retreat held at IITA, Ibadan on from Friday 11th to Saturday 12th July, 2008

Monthly Meetings
A major feature of the activities of the Ilorin Branch of UNIFEMGA had been the monthly meeting which holds every second Sunday of solar calendar. The meeting holds at the IWF Secretariat, Taiwo Road Ilorin. Membership drive has not attracted new members and this called for the setting of a Committee to write a short pamphlet on “Introduction to UNIFEMGA” to enlighten new members and the public on what the association stands for and the activities of the association.
Joint Ramadhan Iftar
The branch held two joint Iftar sessions during the 1429 Ramadhan in the houses of two members, Engr. Kamil Olalekan and Dr. A.G.F. Alabi.
Eid-Adha Family Picnic
The Branch held her yearly Eid-Adha Family Picnic to commemorate the Eid Adha on the 7th of January, 2009, at the Bekandims Holiday Resort. The programme was well attended and the children had a wonderful experience (photograph to be attached later).
Public Lecture
The Branch had set up a Committee to organize a public lecture to sensitize and educate the public on her activities. Meanwhile, the paper delivered at the first annual lecture on the theme “Education: Between Literacy and Learning” by Prof. Raheem Adebayo LAWAL by the former Dean of Education, University of Ilorin has been published and copies are available for sale.
Finance
The activities of the Association are financed through monthly contributions and donation by members. It must be emphasized that some of our members really assisted the Branch in the execution of her programs and the last UNIFEMGA Retreat held at IITA, Ibadan. For instance, some individuals sponsored the Eid Adha Picnic and donated gifts to the children and parents. May Allah continue to bless them, Amen.
Closing
With the assistance of Allah (SWT) and the cooperation of members, the Ilorin Branch of UNIFEMGA is progressing. But we need to come up with new ways of getting more members involved. It is hoped that we shall improve on our activities this year by putting into use what we gained at the UNIFEMGA Retreat.

Assalam Alaykum,

Preamble

Praises and adorations belong to Allah (swt), the Lord of the universe, the Sustainer of everything, and the One who guides to the right path. May the choicest of Allah’s blessings continue to descend on the noble soul of our Prophet, Muhammad, his house hold, his companions, and on the generality of the Muslim Ummah.

This report gives succinct information on the activities of the Ilorin Branch of UNIFEMGA, since the last National Conference at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife for two consecutive programme years (1427/1428 AH (2006/2007) and 1428/1429 AH (2007/2008).

Monthly Meetings
A major feature of the activities of the Ilorin Branch of UNIFEMGA had been the monthly meeting which holds every second Sunday of solar calendar. The meeting holds at the IWF Secretariat, Taiwo Road Ilorin. The meeting in the last two years had been a major avenue for members’ interaction and as a forum for spiritual and social development of members. In the last two years, the regular members have been consistent in attending the meetings (12-15), but we are still trying to get other members commitment in attendance.
Joint Ramadhan Iftar
The branch held two joint Iftar sessions during the 1427 Ramadhan in the houses of two members, Alhaji Aliu Badmus and Pharmacist Tajudeen Adeyemi. The sessions were well attended by members and friends of the Association. The successes recorded during the sessions brought about the increase in the number of joint iftar for the 1428 Ramadhan. Three members: Alhaj Olaolu Ali (SAN), Dr. A. G. F. Alabi (Branch Chairman), and Dr. M. O. Yusuf hosted members for the joint Iftar in 1428 AH. In fact, non-UNIFEMGA members who attended the joint iftar sessions expressed their satisfaction with the programme.
Eid-Adha Family Picnic
The Branch held her yearly Eid-Adha Family Picnic to commemorate the Eid Adha on the 7th of January, 2007, at the Bekandims Holiday Resort. The programme was well attended and the children had a wonderful experience. The 1428 Eid Adha Family Picnic was also held at the Bekandims Holiday Resort on the 22nd of December, 2007.

The attendance, the gifts and programmes at the events surpassed the earlier year. Clips of the events in pictures are hereby attached along with this report. Being a unique programme among Muslims in Ilorin, UNIFEMGA members and their children, friends, and other Muslim organizations look forward for the picnic. It must be underscored that the programme marks out UNIFEMGA as an Islamic organization which had impacted socially on the people within Ilorin.
Annual Lecture
The Branch had her first annual lecture on the theme “Education: Between Literacy and Learning”. The lecture which had to be rescheduled from November 4th, 2006, to February 24th 2007, was held at the Kwara Hotel Hall. The Guest Lecturer, Prof. Raheem Adebayo LAWAL, the Dean of Education, University of Ilorin, delivered a powerful lecture which was adjudged by the members and invitees as stimulating and challenging. The paper had been published by the Branch.

The Chairman of the occasion, Barrister Wale Babalakin (SAN), represented by Professor Ishaq O. Oloyede (then Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin) donated the sum of N250,000 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) towards the programme. Efforts are on to organise another lecture during the course of this year 1429 AH (2008).
Involvement in National and other Branches’ Activities, and Community Involvement
The Branch took active parts in the activities of the National Executive Committee of UNIFEMGA during the two consecutive years. The Branch was also involved in activities of other Branches. The Branch was also adequately represented at the award programme of the Ife Branch of Unife Alumni Association, where a member of Ilorin Branch, Alhaji Olaolu Ali (SAN) and others were given awards. In addition, the Branch represented by the Chairman and the Secretary paid a congratulatory visit to Prof. Ishaq O. Oloyede, on his assumption of office as the Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, and a congratulatory letter was presented to him.
Honours and Professional Responsibilities for Members

The Branch was adequately represented at the presentation of the award. In addition, the Branch Chairman who had been the National President of the Metallurgical and Material Society of Nigeria, assumed office on Saturday the 11th of April, 2008, as the Chairman of the Ilorin Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineer (NSE).
Finance
The activities of the Association are financed through monthly contributions and donation by members. It must be emphasized that some of our members really assisted the Branch in the execution of her programs. For instance, some individuals sponsored the Eid Adha Picnic. May Allah continue to bless them, Amen.
Economic Empowerment
In order to improve the economic conditions of members, a cooperative society, Al-Fallah Cooperative, was established within the course of the period covered by this report. The cooperative is making steady growth, and it is hoped to be a source of improvement in the lives of members of the Branch. More members are joining and they are also deriving benefits from the cooperative.
Closing
With the assistance of Allah (swt) and the cooperation of members, the Ilorin Branch of UNIFEMGA is progressing. Within four years of the inauguration of the Branch, more members are joining and taking active parts in the activities of the Branch.
